This Knowledge Hub is maintained by the Australian Institute for Disaster Resilience (AIDR). AIDR is managed by AFAC on behalf of the National Emergency Management Agency. AIDR delivers a range of products and services on behalf of the Commonwealth Government, as well as State and Territory agencies, to support disaster risk reduction.

Why a Knowledge Hub?

Knowledge is an important element in building resilience. The Australian Disaster Resilience Knowledge Hub (the Hub) provides information about disasters that have affected Australia, ready access to evidence-based research to support improved policy development, decision making and best practice in disaster resilience and the Emergency Management sector. The Hub is an important publicly accessible knowledge resource supporting the implementation of the National Strategy for Disaster Resilience.

Do you have guides on how to use the Knowledge Hub?

We are regularly adding new information, including new and updated guides on how to use the Knowledge Hub. The Guides can be found in the 'Using the Knowledge Hub Collection and can be easily found using the search term 'Guide" and the collection 'Using the Knowledge Hub'in the search bar of the website.

Which web browsers will work with the Knowledge Hub?

The Knowledge Hub has been designed to work with all modern browsers with cookies turned on.

The Knowledge Hub is tested on mobile, tablet and desktop devices using the latest versions of the following browsers.

Why should I register as a user of this site?

You do not need to be a registered user to browse the content on this website.

However, Registered Users will be able to use the more advanced features, including:

Developing their own personal favourite resources in the collection
Contributing resources to the Knowledge Hub

The registration (and login) link can be found on the top right hand side of every page in the website.

Why do I receive an error message when I try to register or login?

The security features on this site require you to have cookies enabled before you can Register or Login to the site. If you receive an error message that includes the words 'Required anti forgery cookie ‘verification request token’ not present', you should enable cookies and re-submit your request.

How can I contribute?

If you'd like to tell us about a great resource you've found, or have written, the best way to send us the information is to use the 'Contribute a Resource' function.

On the bottom of each page on the website, you will find a 'Contribute a Resource' button. To use this feature you will need to be a registered user and be logged in to the site.

When you click this button, you will be taken to a form that will allow you to add text information and upload files.

Send us your photos, videos and audio files, just make sure your happy with our copyright policy first and that you have permission from the copyright owner to send the material to us. We will ask you to confirm this information before you submit your information to us.

You can also give us your feedback - email us at enquiries@aidr.org.au and tell us what you think of the Hub and what you'd like to see here in the future.

How do I change or reset my password?

If you have forgotten your password you can reset it from the logon screen. If you remember your password but would like to change it, you will need to log in then click on your username at the top right hand corner of the screen. If you're having trouble, just contact he Knowledge Hub team at enquiries@aidr.org.au.

How do you decide which events are captured in Disaster Information?

The Australian Disasters Collection includes natural, technological and human-caused events that have a significant impact on Australia and its people.

If you know of an event that does not appear in the Australian Disasters Collection, let us know.

Where do you source your news from?

Information comes from a number of online sources and AIDR's networks across Australia.

If there is news and information you would like to contribute to the Knowledge Hub, the best way to send it to us is to use the 'Contribute a Resource' button at the bottom of every page on the website. Click this button to be taken to a form that will let you send us the information you would like to share.

Alternately, you can contribute information and resources to the Knowledge Hub by emailing it to us at enquiries@aidr.org.au.

Where do you source your data from?

Disaster event summaries and statistics are researched by a team at AIDR. In order to provide verified, evidence-based information for events, the team uses trusted sources, including Bureau of Meteorology, Geoscience Australia, Royal Commission and coroners' reports.

We obtain cost data from several sources including Government Departments, and the Insurance Council of Australia.

I want to use an image / audio recording / video recording.

Information published on the Knowledge Hub is subject to copyright. Whilst much of the information is published under Creative Commons licences or is in the public domain, it is your responsibility to check the copyright status of every individual item you wish to use.

What is a GLIDE number?

A GLobal IDEntifier number is a globally common unique number assigned to disaster events by the Centre for Research on the Epidemiology of Disasters. Some events in Disaster Information have a GLIDE number.
