On 8 May 1943, a train and a bus collided on a level crossing near Wodonga. The bus was travelling to Wodonga, carrying soliders, and VAD's (Voluntary Aid Detatchment). The train hit the front of the bus and ripped it off, pushing it along the track. In total 25 people died; 23 soldiers, one member of the Australian Army Medical Women's Service and the bus driver.
