On 7 May 1952, a crowded eight-car electric train travelling from Liverpool to Sydney was standing at the suburban station of Berala, when a second electric train travelling from Bankstown ran into the rear of the first train.

As a result of this collision, there were ten deaths while another 140 people sustained injuries.
