On 17 September 2004 a school bus carrying 40 students from Lyndhurst Secondary College crashed into the back of a truck that was attempting to avoid a broken down car in the right hand lane of the Burnley Tunnel. Ten ambulances took 21 school children to hospital with neck injuries. The remaining students were able to leave the scene and entered the emergency evacuation tunnel to the Burnley Street exit.
