On 21 January 1977 severe thunderstorms spread over New South Wales, affecting mainly the Sydney regions of Bankstown and Richmond. Winds reached 124 km per hour and there was one fatality.

The Insurance Council of Australia estimated the 1977 damage at $15 million, with the 2017 estimated normalised cost of $281.1 million.
