On 16 December 1998, a severe storm crossed Brisbane suburbs causing extensive hail damage. The most affected suburbs were Clayfield, Windsor, Wilston, Albion, Northgate and Wavell Heights.

The Insurance Council of Australia estimated the 1998 damage at $76 million, with the 2011 estimated normalised cost of $254 million.
