On 22 January 1991 at 7:00pm, a damaging hailstorm occurred in Adelaide. At the time, the storm was one of the most severe on record. Hailstones reached 10 centimetres in diameter, causing damage to motor vehicles, roof tiles and windows resulting in water damage to many houses.

The Insurance Council of Australia estimated the 1991 damage at $30 million, with the 2011 estimated normalised cost of $112 million.
