Bruny Island, Tasmania, May 1837

Mars shipwreck, 1837

Quick Statistics

4 Fatalities

On 5 May 1837, wooden two-mast schooner Mars sailed from Slopen Island, off the Tasmanian coast, carrying a cargo of coal. Bound for Hobart, the vessel never arrived.

Four people died; no trace of a shipwreck was ever found. It is thought Mars may have been blown out into Storm Bay, off Bruny Island, before sinking in a gale.
