On 1 February 1945, a gas explosion killed four men who were entombed as a result of the partial collapse of the New Ebbw Vale No 3 mine at Woodend, approximately one mile from Ipswich, Queensland. 
The explosion, caused by a naked flame exposed to gas, sent debris, concrete and timber more than 200 ft in the air.

This was the first fatality at the New Ebbw Vale No 3 mine after 11 years of production.
