On 29 October 1905, a fire caused by spontaneous combustion began in the Stanford Merthyr Colliery. In an attempt to extinguish the fire six workers died and nine were badly injured.

The Chief Inspector of Mines made recommendations governing the use of naked lights (flames) in the mine, however found no grounds for prosecution.
