Industrial - Broken hill mine collapse

Quick Statistics

9 Fatalities
1 Injured

At approximately 4pm on 18 July 1895, Broken Hill's South Mine was announced as unsafe due to sulphide-affected ground and the miners were ordered out of the mine.

The collapse came when the ground then gave way, and the pressure of the large quantity of earth caused an air blast which threw the miners against the timbers, resulting in nine deaths and one serious injury.
