On 17 March 1900, six men were being lowered down the Balmain Colliery in a bucket when an obstruction on the shaft wall tipped over. Five of the men were killed after falling nearly 122 metres to the bottom. The sixth man, despite suffering injuries, remained in the bucket and was lowered down safely.
