On 7 March 1955, between Mackay and Cape Capricorn, a lugger (boat) sank when it was caught in a cyclone with winds that reached 145 km per hour. The crew of eight drowned.

Several buildings were unroofed at Yeppoon and major floods occurred at Flinders Burdekin and Fitzroy Rivers.
