On January 20 2017, a vehicle with one occupant (the driver) drove a car through the pedestrian mall in Bourke Street, and continued to travel along the footpath on Bourke Street in Melbourne's CBD at high speed

The vehicle killed 6 people and led to 37 others being hospitalised for their injuries.  The youngest victim was only 3 months old.

The driver was sentenced to life imprisonment, for multiple counts of recklessly endangering life and 6 counts of murder. His sentence carries a 46 year non-parole period.
