On the 3 November 1980 at approximately 5 am, firefighters responded to a fire incident near Waterfall, New South Wales. A fire tanker was trapped by the blaze, which had spread up from a nearby gully and was out of control. The five firefighters aboard the vehicle were subsequently killed.
