In January 1983, a number of bushfires caused significant damage to areas in and around the Sydney region.

Approximately 60,000 hectares of land, including a pine forest, was lost. The cost of the damage at the time was estimated at $12 million dollars.

On 9 January, three firefighters died when their tanker was overrun by fire near Grays Point.
