Overview of the 2013 Blue Mountains Bushfires
A series of bushfires impacted communities in the Blue Mountains region of New South Wales in October 2013, particularly around Springwood, Winmalee, Yellow Rock and Mount Victoria. The most destructive fires ignited on 17 October under hot, dry and windy conditions, spreading rapidly across multiple fronts and threatening residential areas.
The fires burned on three primary fronts, in Linksview Road, Mount York, and State Mine. The fires were described as one of the worst disasters in the region’s history. A state of emergency was declared as firefighters worked to contain fast-moving fire activity and protect communities.
Significant property losses occurred, with 196 homes destroyed in the Blue Mountains, including 185 lost in the Linksview Road fire alone. Many additional properties were damaged, and large parts of the community were displaced. The fires continue to have lasting social and emotional impacts on residents, businesses, and local services.
The 2013 bushfires highlighted the risks associated with extreme weather, fuel loads and urban bushland interfaces, and informed ongoing improvements in bushfire preparedness, emergency response and community resilience across New South Wales.
