On 27 August 2020, Melbourne experienced a storm and strong winds, associated with a passage of fast-moving cold front. The Bureau of Meteorology found the strongest wind gust recorded in Greater Melbourne was 115 km/h at South Channel Island.

There were power outages and storm damage across the state. The SES received 2,000 requests for assistance across the state, 85% of those relating to fallen trees. The extreme weather and falling trees caused three fatalities.
