On 30 June 1948, the C38 class locomotive 3817 derailed at Rocky Ponds, near Harden. The engine was in charge of the South-West Mail Train and at approximately 5 am, it and seven of its nine carriages came off the line at a curve. Four people from the first carriage behind the engine were killed and a further 18 were injured. It was believed that the derailment was caused by a break in the line. The speed at the time was only 64 km per hour, which was under the speed limit. An inquest found the deaths to be accidental.
