25 Injured

In the evening of 13 August 1998, a tourist coach and a semi-trailer truck collided on the Hume Highway near Mullengandra, a small town approximately 30 kilometres north-east of Albury.

The bus and the truck collided on a single lane section of the highway, tearing out of the front right hand corner of the bus and leaving a large opening almost the full length of the bus. The semi-trailer veered off the road and ended up in a ditch.

The truck driver died at the scene. The bus contained 25 passengers, the majority of whom were a Chinese Government delegation from Hebei province. Following the accident, several passengers were trapped in the wreckage of the bus, but were rescued by State Emergency Service and fire service personnel from Holbrook and Albury. All 25 injured passengers were taken to Albury Base Hospital for treatment.
