On 25 April 2015, Sydney experienced a significant hailstorm. Five adjoining buildings were bought down due to the weight of the hail. Hailstones measuring between 1-2cm were reported from Newtown to Mt Druitt, with State Emergency Services responding to 145 calls for assistance. The Insurance Council of Australia declared the event catastrophic, and insurance costs amounted to $470,819,649.
