In April 1998 a severe thunderstorm with strong wind gusts reported up to 80 km per hour, swept from New South Wales into Ipswich and other Brisbane suburbs. Strong winds up to 117 km per hour were recorded in Amberley. Three people died when they were electrocuted by a fallen power line. Other damage reported included yachts in the Brisbane to Gladstone yacht race.
