On 2 March 1949, a tropical cyclone made landfall over Gladstone and Rockhampton which resulted in widespread damage to 15 towns in the region. As a consequence there was severe flooding in central Queensland which left 300 people homeless and 1500 homes affected. The event resulted in four deaths.

Damage at the time of the event was estimated to have cost between £300,000 and £400,000.
